“What in the holy hell is that?” Chief Grimes asked, pointing up toward the top of a sixty-foot pine tree.

“Looks like a calf, Chief.” Officer Mackenzie answered him.

Grimes stared up the dried out husk of the animal. He’d taken off his hat to wipe his brow, when his eyes had casually taken in the heights of the majestic trees and he’d seen the calf up there. Now, he was looking around at all the other trees to see if there were any other surprises up there. “I know what it is, but what I really want to know is how in the hell the goddamned thing got up there!”

“If I may, Chief Grimes.” CJ Barton, the Bigfoot hunter, spoke up.

Grimes looked at the man, standing there with his olive green and tan clothing, and his thick, pepper beard. “You know what’s going on here, don’t you?”

“I can hazard a guess.” The researcher said.

“Give me a second.” Grimes shook his head.

For good measure, the veteran cop took half a dozen strides away, as if CJ’s craziness might infect him. Things hadn’t started off good between them. When the Chief had first gotten back to the police department, he’d found CJ and his dispatcher Claudine in a heated shouting match over getting some cops out to look for the man’s missing partner. Claudine had already taken a shot at him with her Mace spray, but apparently she’d missed. CJ had gotten into it with Grimes too, up until the Chief had taken him into the squad car so they could begin their drive over to Oak Glenn.

That’s when some more Benton bullshit happened. There was only one main road up to the section of town called Oak Glenn, with a number of twists and turns that led out to isolated bunches of homes. People who didn’t like living close to the hub of town lived up there. Grimes had driven up that road dozens of times, maybe a hundred times. On this day, he hadn’t quite gotten lost, but didn’t know which way to drive. One single, goddamned road, going from south to north, and Grimes was too disoriented to keep driving. It had gotten so bad he’d asked Mackenzie to park his cruiser on the side of the road and take over driving his car.

At least they’d put a BOLO (Be On The Lookout police bulletin) on the killer clown, Grimes recalled. Claudine was printing out flyers showing the clearest shot of the creep. The flyer warned that the clown was armed and dangerous, and that the police should be called immediately if he were spotted. Those flyers would be put up all over town as soon as the Chief got all his personnel back from the two active crime scenes.

Grimes took a few steps back toward CJ, who was now glancing up at the calf corpse stuck up in the tree. “All right, let’s hear it.”

“It’s a cattle mutilation.” CJ replied.

“Well, how in the hell did the cattle end up there?”

“It was abducted.
